• News (always read multiple sources with differing political slants to get the full story):
• 9 News - The web site for the local channel 9 news. These guys are the best middle-of-the-road news organization in Denver at the present time. Lots of good local info.
• Denver Post - A Denver paper. I used to think they had a slightly leftist view. The 2004 election showed that, with a little more work, they could rival Boulder's Daily Camera for their far left views. These guys are run by the same outfit that ran the Rocky Mountain News. Why they kept this one going and killed RMN, I'll never understand. But it's the only paper Denver has left.
• Fox News - Used to be pretty good, and rightish of middle of the road, but have gotten tad hysterical of late. Their bias has really started to show through, to the point that I now consider them as useless as the Denver Post. Really, they've become a rag. They now often report things without knowing what they're talking about. Didn't used to be that way. We also used to feature their health news RSS feed on What's Going Round, but dropped them because every other day the lead story was about sex. Web design sucks, too. Hard to find real news among the fluff. Sigh. May drop these guys entirely.
• WestWord - Denver weekly with music info and slightly off-the-wall stuff.
• Boulder's The Daily Camera - The Daily Camera should be considered the flagship of leftist reporting. The Opinion Page is a laugh-riot, with the actual -ahem- "news" not far behind. Conspiracy theorists unite! But they do have good local info.

• OLGA - The On-Line Guitar Archive Here's hoping these guys survive, though they've had the same notice up for years. NMPA and MPA have bullied them into taking down their site. Because, you know, having other musicians playing popular songs will certainly eat into the original performer's profits. Really.

• - Here's to old RPI. Where I spent four years learning that you can pass a test with a score of 14 (yes, out of 100). (OK, that was one test in one class, but passing tests with a 50 was NOT unusual.)

  • Event Seating - My wife's mother's and step-father's new web site, selling rentable seating and tables for events.


• "Tech" stuff:
• - My preferred Linux distribution for newer hardware. Now running 11.04. Will probably change over to Xubuntu with any further upgrades as the new default UI for Ubuntu sucks, as does Gnome 3. But still easier to use than most with a decent processor. And doesn't have half the issues of Windows.
• - My preferred Linux distribution for old hardware. Sure, there are other distributions out there that are way easier to install (Ubuntu, Fedora). But I was sold on Gentoo when I had my old 550 MHz Pentium 3 running as well as my wife's 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 running XP. OK, not a high bar - it IS Windows - but still, it was impressive. Compiling your system from scratch so it's tuned to your hardware has its advantages. But if the word "compile" scares you, I'd go with Ubuntu or Fedora. They'll still out-perform anything coming from Microsoft. I don't run any form of Windows on any of my systems at home. I'll use it at work, but only because I have to. Frankly, Microsoft's greatest strength is their marketing. Their technology is stupid beyond belief. It took me 10 minutes to hate Vista. "Yes, I want to run that program. I just double-clicked it, didn't I?" Windows 7 was an improvement - took 15 minutes. "Where the hell did my browser go?"
• Guidescope - Ad and cookie blocking software. These guys keep a database of ad sites. You run a web proxy on your computer that checks their database for every connection your browser attempts. If it's an ad site, it gets blocked. Nicely speeds your web access by blocking the ads on all kinds of pages (they tend to miss site-local advertising, but doubleclick and the like are definitely blocked). You can add more sites for yourself that they may or may not add to their general database. I used to use their ad-blocking and manage my cookies within Mozilla. I stopped using these guys because it seemed their site was getting overrun, and it was actually taking longer to load pages than not using them. Maybe they've corrected that problem by now.
• Privoxy - Still more ad and cookie blocking software and still more! These guys are similar to Guidescope, but you maintain your own database on your own computer. For those familiar with such things, these guys used to be JunkBusters. Privoxy comes with some pretty capable pre-set filters (though they tend to push things a little too far). Many sites don't work well with this software until you tune the settings. I went to this code when Guidescope started becoming more of a hassle than it was worth. Now, I just use the embedded Firefox plugin, so even this has fallen by the wayside, though rumor has it that AdBlock is going to get goofy, so I may come back.
